“All right, everyone,” Chelsea’s voice boomed throughout the tiny wood-paneled room. “Linda and I are going to give a quick operations update. Then I want to focus the majority of this meeting on the fundraiser, which is now set for late July. Exactly a month from today.”

“We’re pulling this together in a month?” said the foster coordinator, a tall woman who kept to herself most of the time.

Chelsea gave a reassuring nod. “Yes, but we’re following the plans and using as many resources as we can from previous events like this, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll rundown what we’ve already worked out in a second.”

She stepped back so Linda could give an update on some dogs they took in from a hoarding case and list potential dates for future transports. The numbers zoomed past Molly’s consciousness. She’d known it would be difficult to concentrate this morning, but it was turning out to be an impossible task.

After the disastrous evening that should have been a celebration, Molly hadn’t expected to hear from Jo at all over the weekend. The short, I’m sorry, text Saturday afternoon was almost worse than nothing at all.

Molly had responded that it was okay, that she understood. But really, she didn’t. Especially when she didn’t hear another word from Jo after that.

She’d been so thrown off that she’d forgotten to send her pre-drafted breakup text to Royce. It was Sunday morning before she finally sent it. He didn’t respond at all, and with everything else going on, she’d gotten a lot less satisfaction from dumping him than she’d expected when she’d put these plans together.

Her plan hadn’t included confessing her feelings to Jo. And none of her plans had included Jo confessing back. The jumble of emotions she’d felt in those brief moments—shock, elation, confusion, disappointment—was more than she’d thought could be crammed into one short section of a conversation.

“What about you, Molly?”

Her head shot up, and she felt her eyes growing wide with terror as she realized everyone in the room was staring at her. Thankfully, Chelsea repeated the question.

“Any suggestions for the event name?”

“Oh, um, no.” The event. Right. That’s what they were discussing. That’s what she should have been focusing on instead of her love life in shambles. “I tried to brainstorm this weekend, but everything I came up with sounded awful.”

Chelsea gave a sympathetic smile. Not everyone was fond of the director’s decisions, or her commanding style of leadership. But she had a knack for reading people and knowing when to give space and when to push. Molly respected that most of all about her boss. Especially in this moment, as she directed her attention to someone else for ideas.

Eventually, Chelsea and Linda wrapped up the meeting, and Molly and Kara headed outside toward the Cat Shack. It was a gorgeous, sunny summer morning. Perfectly warm and bright, if the humidity hadn’t been hovering around eighty percent. Pretty skies didn’t compensate for air that was basically hot broth.

Molly felt a pinch of disappointment as they neared the building.
